Reading Big Top and the Blues

 Join us at Greenlight Bookstore for a reading by blues musician and author Michael Hill of his chidren’s book Big Top & the Blues.  This is a special Black History Month Children’s Hour event and Michael will also perform the original song that accompanies the book, a story about a blues musician and his family and how they stay connected while he is on the road.  Greenlight Bookstore, 686 Fulton Street, at South Portland, Fort Greene, Brooklyn.  718-246-0200.  Books are on sale at the store and will be available during the event.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       &n

Mix & Mingle

Mix and Mingles are an opportunity for our youth and elders to come together in conversation, dance, games and entertainment.  Here youth and elders are able to enjoy each other’s company and begin to form a relationship.  Our mix and mingles support our Errands for Elders program as well as our intergenerational oral history project:  Preserving the Past; Exploring the Future.   Join us at Paul Robeson High School, 150 Albany Avenue, between Dean and Bergen, in Crown Heights Brooklyn, the Lyles Studio, room 312. 

Black History Birthday Celebration for Langston Hughes

Bailey’s Cafe will be joining actor Anthony Thompson and visual artist Renaldo Davidson in a celebration of Langston Hughes’ 109th birthday at the New York Public Library Countee Cullen Branch, 104 West 136th Street near Lenox Avenue, Harlem.  We will be presenting members of our Errands for Elders Program, our youth theater troupe and a short reading from Southern Grown.  Mr. Thompson and Mr. Davidson will be presenting "Jesse B. Simple Alive in Harlem."  Please join us for a stimulating, informative and entertaining afternoon.

Oral History w/ Bailey’s Cafe and StoryCorps

Have you heard a story worth remembering? UBW tells stories in its dances and believes we all
have compelling stories to share. Become a story gatherer in this workshop about collecting and
telling oral histories. UBW has partnered with StoryCorps (heard on NPR) and Bailey’s Café
for this special event.   Bailey’s performance troupe will be sharing a theatrical retelling of our elders’ stories.

International Food Festival at Hattie Carthan Community Garden

Come out and join the Hattie Carthan Community Garden members in their annual internatioinal food fest.  There will be a vast array of international foods, reflecting the backgrounds of our community, to purchase by the plate as well as traditional "fast" food for those on the go–hamburgers and franks.   Live music will be provided.  All proceeds go to support the garden.   The garden is located on Marcy Avenue between Lafayette and Clifton Place in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn.  Volunteers are needed to help make the day a great success.  Call 718-670-7063 if you are interested in volunteering.

Please join us for The Bailey’s Cafe Experience, while we honor Brooklyn Change Makers:  Black Veterans for Social Justice, Crown Heights Mediation Center, Dance Theatre Etcetera, Yonnette Fleming, Groundswell Community Mural Project, 651Arts, and Urban Bush Women. 

Where:  The Hattie Carthan Community Garden and Market, Marcy Avenue, between Clifton Place and Lafayette Avenue

Live music provided by Michael Hill’s Blues Mob and special guests

Food provided by local restaurants and Bailey’s Cafe. 

Tickets $50.  All proceeds go to support Bailey’s Cafe programs. 

 

Bailey’s Performance Troop at Red Hook Water Festival

Bailey’s Cafe Performance Troop will present a student-created improvised theater/movement piece–"The Color of Love," at the 17th Annual Red Hook Festival at Louis J. Valentino Jr .Park.  The event is presented by Dance Theatare Etcetera and features La Excelencia, Decadance Theater, and the M.U.G.A.B.E.E. along with community youth groups, and a variety of waterfront activities.  Admission is free–just bring a blanket or a chair. 

LUG (Living Urban Green) Your Share Performance and Presentation at Brooklyn Student Advisory Council

Members of Bailey’s Cafe Performance Troop and youth members of our green program–L.U.G. (Living Urban Green) Your Share will present to students and Coordinators of Student Affairs from Brooklyn high schools on Tuesday, May 25th at Paul Robeson High School.  The skits focus on facts about going green and on character building.
