The Hancock T&T Community Backyard Garden Park, 324 Hancock Street (“The Community Backyard”) between Throop & Tompkins, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, NY, is the brainchild of Darryl Montgomery. Since this region of Bed-Stuy has a very small amount of usable greenspace and no flex designed outdoor spaces of this size, his objective was to transform an underused Green Thumb community garden into a mini Prospect Park in the heart of Bed-Stuy, a place he refers to as the “Urban Heartland.” Partnered with Gerald Coulthurst, Hancock T&T Block Association President, powered by Green Thumb, and empowered by community volunteers, the team of the Bed-Stuy Community Coalition and the Hancock T&T Block Assoc. built the Community Backyard over an approximate 3 year period that began July 2014.
