BLDG. STUDY 08-13-21 (1

Building Study created by Irvin Ponde, AIA Associate, William Leeds Architect P.C.

Bailey’s turns 20 in 2023!  To kick off our year of celebrating, we are starting a building fund to secure a home of our own.  207 Bainbridge is a short distance from our current address and is one potential site.

Located on the same block where our current rented storefront resides, 207 Bainbridge has the potential to bring new life and energy to this part of Malcolm X Boulevard, where many storefronts are shuttered. Bailey’s Cafe is looking to raise 2 million to purchase the building, begin much needed renovations and repairs and provide the community with a space for creativity, wellness, intergenerational connection, community gatherings, service and access to resources. Purchasing 207 Bainbridge will solidify and secure Bailey’s place in the Bedford-Stuyvesant community.

Plans for the three storefronts, rooftop and two apartments include:

  • Storefront facing Malcolm X Boulevard: a gathering place, library, a space for music (the piano would be in this room), small pantry area, comfortable chairs etc.

  • Storefront connected to the front space: makers workshop space – DYI workshops in a variety of mediums as well as studio space for visual and other artists.

  • Storefront with entrance on Bainbridge: space for movement as well as serving as gallery space.

  • Flat rooftop: a garden and gathering space

  • Second floor apartment: Wellness Center

  • Third floor apartment: source of earned income but rented below market to working artists

  • Restoration of exterior facade, adding windows were possible and landscaping to beautify the corner

  • Eventually renovating the basement into storage space and a recording studio
